Charl was born in the North of Namibia and grew up on the family farm. Growing up on the farm he had an interest in wildlife and nature from an early age. He started guiding in 1998 in the Namib Desert, but soon moved back to the North of Namibia. There he started to do safaris to the North East of Namibia and the Caprivi where most of the big game and birds are found. In 2001 he went to work on a lodge outside of Etosha, where he did game drives in to Etosha National Park.
